This portrait questions what it is to know someone. I began with photographic portraits and explored what could and should be included to expose what I know and see in my subjects. There is a paradox in portraits where including one element may mean leaving something else out – there is never any absolute depiction or representation. The masked figure represents the unknown part of my father. The abstraction in the background shows the reality and complex depth of the real scene and the real person, who seems hidden behind the formality of the setting.
