Following the passing of my mother last year, I quickly learned that we are not invincible and our mortality is very real. My concept of portraying death and mortality, contrasted with life and vitality, lead to the juxtaposition of visual elements. Soft pencil tones were played against the harsh, bold geometric shapes created by the coloured paper and black pen. Birds, symbols of jubilation, were placed alongside bones and skeletal remains. My fascination with nature and Art Nouveau, as executed by artist Audrey Kawasaki, inspired the content, curvature and line.
