My work explores the idea of the unattractive to challenge society’s view of ugliness by highlighting parts of the face that people find repulsive, confronting or abnormal. This relates to the way the media influences young people and their view of themselves. By enhancing individual characteristics, I wanted to celebrate the subject’s personality and show how parts of the face can be more powerful and important than beauty. I was inspired by caricatures and how they highlight and exaggerate unique features. I manipulated shadows to intensify the distinctive features of my grandfather’s face.
