I admire the innocent beauty of small waterbirds and tried to interpret this beauty in a way that reflects both the birds’ nature and how man sees them. My inspiration came while sitting in the park one day doing school work and being entranced by a pair of kingfishers fishing near me. I was also inspired by Murray Griffin and Brett Whiteley. Lino cutting allowed me to reduce my drawings to simple, patterned, colourless representations which enhanced the birds’ features. I made collograph blocks using natural objects and printed the two blocks together.
