In a drawing of a monkey on a previous page (not illustrated) Glen noted that he loved ‘the shape of the arthritic, broken hands. Works well to symbolise the physical damage done to animals caught in the illegal pet trade. Will study these hand shapes further’. We see evidence of him doing this over the following pages, including this full page of hand studies. Notes on the page opposite these studies include the comment that ‘studying my own hands helped me to understand the anatomy so that I could manipulate it. The arthritic and broken shape of the top two designs is exactly what I want for my monkey’.
