Studio Arts
Mornington Secondary College, Mornington

My works were originally based around a general theme of youth. I became interested in exploring a wide range of contemporary youth culture. In my research I became interested in the idea of appropriation. I began researching famous artworks from throughout history and after looking at other artists such as Anne Zahalka, who have used appropriation as a method, I realised the power of this method. I then became interested in appropriating classic images from the history of art; but re-contextualising them by including references to contemporary youth culture. All of the works were taken with a digital SLR, either at a location or in a studio or studio like set up using props, costumes and my friends as models. Some works required multiple photo shoots. All images have been edited using Photoshop. Some more than others.

Girl with a pearl earring

This work obviously references Vermeer’s, Girl with a pearl earring. I have used the white ear phones as the contemporary reference to youth culture, the white shape also references the pearl earring in the original work.

Advice to new students
Document everything and look deep into every idea you have, both big or small, because you never know where it will take you.
