Connecting the future to the past

The 11th AICCM Paintings Conservation Symposium
Thu 9 & Fri 10 Oct 2008

The National Gallery of Victoria, in association with the Australia’s association of conservation professional (AICCM), is proud to host a special symposium dedicated to examining the past, present and future of the paintings conservation profession in Australia.

Until now, the development of paintings conservation in this country has passed with little or no historical study; this symposium is intended to act as a starting point for future studies into the continually evolving roles of the paintings conservator. Where once apprentice-trained restorers were called on mainly to repair and clean paintings, University-trained paintings conservators are now expected to contribute to complex debates concerning connoisseurship, authorship, materials and techniques, museum environments, and issues relating to handling, storage and display. Speakers at this symposium will present talks discussing how these changes have occurred, where great contributions have been made, and what lessons can be learned from the experiences of our predecessors as we look ahead to the future. This symposium will be of great interest to anyone in the field of conservation and the study of Australia’s art institutions.
