A major new initiative that will bring together the latest contemporary practice from around the globe was announced last night. Beginning in the Summer of 2017 and to be held every three years, this ambitious event initiated by the National Gallery of Victoria will be a large-scale celebration of the best of contemporary international art and design. Exploring the global and inter-disciplinary nature of contemporary art practice, the NGV Triennial will present major figures in contemporary art, architecture and design, film and performance, highlighting the most dynamic and adventurous new shifts and cultural contexts in contemporary art and design practice today.
NGV Director Tony Ellwood said, “Melbourne Now has been a catalyst for a new approach at the NGV, allowing us to open up possibilities for creative collaborations between artists, curators and the public. This Triennial allows the NGV to take the exploration of contemporary art and design to the next level, and to evolve the ideas we began to explore in Melbourne Now.
Exploring and reflecting upon the most interesting work being developed by artists and designers in Australia and internationally, the NGV Triennial series will be curated internally in collaboration with a diversity of external partners.
Mr Ellwood continued, “We will draw on the finest talents and the most interesting ideas to bring this event to life. We are thrilled to be making this announcement and very inspired by this opportunity to present newly commissioned work by practitioners unfamiliar to Australian audiences, alongside well-known, significant figures in contemporary art, design and creative fields“
The NGV has also announced a new dedicated fund to direct investment into contemporary art and design.
Tony Ellwood said “We recognize that art is transformative, and to this end we are keen to encourage and invest in ideas that generate discussion and meaningful engagement in a variety of ways and with a broad audience. We believe too it is important that we significantly grow our representation of contemporary art and design at the NGV. To foster this we have established the Campaign for Contemporary Art to attract investment that can then be channeled into works, projects and commissions from Australian and international artists.”
