Community Hall has been graced by countless collectives, artists, cultures and communities since its inception in November. As we draw close to a busy January we look forward to a jam packed schedule of programming throughout February.
As part of the Sustainable Living Festival, Community Hall is set to host three exciting programs. A hands-on investigation of our reliance on technological gadgetry will be led by provocateur Leyla Acaroglu and her team of ‘dead stuff dissectionists’. They will spend an afternoon conducting e-waste autopsies and asking the important questions about why so much of the tech hardware we rely on is near impossible to recycle. Ink & Spindle will run an ‘open studio’, featuring interactive demonstrations of their screen printing techniques using water based, solvent free inks and organic cotton, hemp & yak blend fabrics.
Melbourne Now artist Treahna Hamm will demonstrate how she creates many elements of her work using materials sustainably foraged from the environment surrounding her home in regional Victoria, including a type of tree bark that can be used to dye textiles and paper.
Back by popular demand, artist and fashion designer Adele Varcoe will transform NGV International into a spotty paradise by releasing 300 polka dot onesies into the world. By dressing everyone the same, Adele aims to bring people together and question how fashion affects the interactions between them. Onesies will be distributed between 11am – 4pm in all shapes and sizes, audiences will need to get in quick to be part of this unique performance.
Acclaimed contemporary ceramic sculptor, Vipoo Srivilasa is known for creating artworks that are often playful and whimsical, while exploring complex issues of identity, politics and the environment. For Melbourne Now, Vipoo will invite audiences to join him for BLEACH, a workshop to create small ‘coral’ sculptures, using re-cycled blue and white trash, while the process of making invites reflection on how humanity impacts on our precious coral reefs.
