Steve Vizard

Farewell to Steve Vizard

Last Wednesday (26 May) President of the NGV's Council of Trustees, Steve Vizard, announced he would not be seeing a third term as NGV chairperson.

Said Mr Vizard: "It is time for someone else to guide the NGV through the next phase of its glorious history. While I am honored to have served the community for so long, now is the ideal time for a successor to help inject new vigor into the NGV.

"The NGV is in great shape and has a worldwide reputation as one of the top five galleries in the world. All Victorians should be proud with our wonderful galleries on St Kilda Road and at Federation Square. With more than three million people expected to visit the two galleries this year, the public affection for the NGV has never been greater."

The Premier, Mr Steve Bracks, paid tribute to Mr Vizard's years of service to the NGV.

"Since his appointment in September, 1998, Steve Vizard has demonstrated his outstanding qualities of leadership and his ability to enthuse and inspire those around him. As President of the Board of Trustees of the NGV, he delivered two outstanding projects for the people of Victoria - the new NGV spaces at Federation Square and the jewel in the crown, the remodeled NGV International on St Kilda Road.

"He led the Board from the early stages of both these projects and can take pride in his achievements. Steve has been generous with his time and talent and all Victorians thank him for that," said Mr Bracks.

Steve Vizard's last official function will be to MC the official opening of The Impressionists: Masterpieces From the Musée d'Orsay on Wednesday, 16 June.

2004  is a dynamic, timely and exciting exhibition that will immerse people in the latest developments in contemporary culture. It will delight, confound, and challenge and make Federation Square more than ever, the place to visit.
Frances Lindsay, Deputy Director (Australian Art), National Gallery of Victoria

Over the past two years, a team of curators has been seeking out artists, new media workers and writers, mapping emerging trends on contemporary Australian art, cinema, video and digital media.

Opening 8 June,  2004  will present one of the most ambitious surveys of contemporary Australian art and culture in recent history. A major collaborative project between the National Gallery of Victoria and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image,  2004  explores the breadth and diversity of visual culture as it is being practised in Australia.   There are seven components to this exciting exhibition spread across The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australian, ACMI, and online.

Every movement, every style, every major artist is represented with the most outstanding examples - it just does not get any better than this.
Ted Gott, Senior Curator of International Art, National Gallery of Victoria

They are some of the greatest pictures in the world. It simply must not be missed, and is one of the biggest art events Australia has ever had.
Dr Gerard Vaughan, Director, National Gallery of Victoria

For many years, exhibitions of French Impressionist paintings have attracted huge crowds, and yet in the late 19 th century, when the school first emerged as a challenge to traditional European painting, the artists and their work incurred the wrath of many critics. "What do we see in the work of those men? Nothing but an insult to the taste and intelligence of the public," wrote French critic, Emile Cajarat, at the time of the Impressionists' first show.

Don't miss this extraordinary show of more than 90 masterworks from iconic artists, including paintings by Manet, Monet, van Gogh, Cézanne, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro and Toulouse-Lautrec. This is a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition of profound importance, and we look forward to seeing you there.
