Footy comes to the NGV

Footy and art have come together in The Spirit of Football exhibition, which opens today at the NGV. Last night, during a live cross to Channel Nine's The Footy Show, Gallery Director, Dr Gerard Vaughan, announced the winner of The Spirit of Football $40,000 acquisitive prize, David Wadelton for his work titled Show them you want it.

This great celebration of football that combines art and our national code in a most innovative and inspiring way is on at The Ian Potter Centre, NGV Australia at Federation Square. Sponsored by Geoff Slattery Publishing, the exhibition also invites visitors to vote on their favorite artwork. On the eve of the AFL Finals in September, the winner of the People's Choice award - a $5000 prize - will be presented to one of the exhibiting artists.

Come and see the varied works of the 21 artists who were invited to take part. They include Brook Andrew, Jon Campbell, Kate Daw, Greg Creek (who was awarded a special $5000 prize for capturing the community's engagement with the game), eX de Medici, Kim Donaldson, Mark Galea, Stephen Haley, Gary James (aka Spook), Tim McMonagle, Vera Möller, Danny Moynihan, Peggy Napangardi Jones, Louise Paramor, Anthony Pelchen, Gareth Sansom, Kathy Temin, Ray Thomas, Martin Tighe, David Wadelton and Ross Watson. Enigmatic nudes
in the works of Man Ray

"Man Ray was an artist who painted what he could not photograph and photographed what he could not paint."
Judy Annear, Senior Curator of Photography, Art Gallery of New South Wales

Man Ray - the first large-scale exhibition of Man Ray's photography presented in Australia - opened last night at NGV International. One of the most famous and original artists of the 20th century, Man Ray produced iconic photographs: eloquent portraits, dreamy solarised nudes, divine fashion photography and enigmatic images.

The majority of the 200 works in the exhibition comprise vintage photographs made between 1917 and 1939, considered to be Man Ray's most influential and productive period. Some of these works have never been published. The works are drawn from the collection of Lucien Treillard, Man Ray's assistant in the last years of the artist's life, the Musée Nationale d'Arte Moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris, the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and the National Gallery of Victoria.

John Glover's whole new world...

NGV Director, Dr Gerard Vaughan says the John Glover exhibition (to open on 13 August at NGV Australia) will offer visitors "an exciting journey of discovery". John Glover and the Colonial Picturesque is the most extensive exhibition of Glover's work ever undertaken. Dr Vaughan says that other exhibitions of European artists in Australia have focussed on the Australian work alone and "therefore presented only half the history". "Being able to present such a broad selection of Glover's work allows the viewer to appreciate how much Glover evolved as an artist, and to understand the dramatic impact the Australian landscape had on his life and work."

Regarded as the most important artist working outside Europe in the 1830s, British-born John Glover produced numerous historically valuable images showing the unspoiled Australian landscape. His images also provide an understanding of early Australian colonial life.
