What's On The Ian Potter Centre: NGV International

Holiday at the NGV Looking for something to do on Boxing Day? Both NGV International on St Kilda Road and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia will be open from 10am-5pm on Monday 26 December and Tuesday 27 December. Entry is free. We are also open on New Year’s Day. Come and see our internationally-acclaimed collection, view the special exhibitions, have lunch at one of our restaurants or cafes – or just sit in the Great Hall or the NGV Garden at St Kilda Road and enjoy the peace. For all Program bookings: Telephone (03) 8662 1555 Lecture: In the Grip of the Beast Escape from the heat of summer, and enter the cool of the forest for an afternoon of gorilla madness at NGV International. Find out the origins of the King Kong phenomenon through a pair of fascinating lectures that explore the impact on art, science and literature of the Western world’s discovery of the gorilla in 1847. Ted Gott, Senior Curator, International Art will explore the work of French sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet, who amazed the French art world with life-size gorilla sculptures in 1859 and 1887. Robert M. Peck, Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, looks at the life of French-American explorer Paul du Chaillu, who in the 1850s and 1860s became the first Western hunter to describe encounters with gorillas in the wild. Date: Sunday 15 January, 2–4pm. Includes afternoon tea Tour: Stencil art in the CBD Join Andrew Macdonald, founder of Citylights as he unveils some of the CBD’s street art secrets.
