Sidney Nolan – Opens 22 Feb!

Rediscover Nolan’s most famous and important paintings alongside works rarely seen by the public, in this major retrospective exhibition on display for the first time in Melbourne.

This exhibition examines each critical period in the artist’s career and highlights the evolution of his vision from its genesis in St Kilda during the late 1930s, through the iconic Ned Kelly series of the 1940s, to the United Kingdom half a century later.

With over 250 works gathered from Australian and New Zealand collections, this exhibition traces the development of British art and society across six decades of tremendous innovation and change.

This is your last chance to explore themes as varied as the grace and elegance of the Edwardian era, the brash and heady courage of the 1920s and the shock of both World Wars. Modern Britain 1900-1960 must close Sunday 24 February.

Black in Fashion: Mourning to Night

Throughout history, the colour black has been associated at various times with death, power, elegance, urbanity, subversion and sex appeal. Black in Fashion explores the evolution of black in fashion from the extravagance of the seventeenth century through to the groundbreaking designs of the present.

Black in Fashion marks the first time an exhibition has been presented in both the National Gallery of Victoria’s venues, NGV International and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia.
