NGV Program Highlights!
Sat 14 Jun, 11am
At the beginning of the 20th century the notion of photography as one of the creative arts was a radical proposition. With Gallery 291, Alfred Stieglitz sought to instruct about the fundamentals of avant garde art and to provoke serious discussion: as well as advocating photography as art, he mounted what he claimed to be the first exhibition anywhere to present African sculpture as fine art rather than ethnography, and famously exhibited Duchamp’s machine-made urinal, Fountain, in 1917. Join us for a discussion on art, philosophy and aesthetics.
Speaker Graham Parker, art educator
Sat 14 Jun, 3.30pm
Patricia Petersen will use Jules-Joseph Lefebre’s La Cigale as a departure point for a discussion on the body and the gaze.
Speaker Patricia Petersen, Department of Philosophy, The University of Melbourne
Sun 15 Jun, 2pm
Historic gesture, early instruments, period garments and dances taken from original manuscripts will highlight this one hour presentation. The program marks 30 years of performances by The Rippon Lea Renaissance Dancers. Arrive early to secure a seat.
Performers Early Music Consort of Melbourne, Merrin Torpy (soprano with gesture), Rippon Lea Renaissance and Baroque Dancers
