John Brack’s The bar 1954
An icon of Melbourne life is in your hands

More than any other artist of his generation, John Brack was a painter of modern Australian life. With a frank and penetrating gaze, he documented aspects of contemporary society, highlighting the human condition in quintessential images of twentieth century Australian art.

Collins St, 5pm has long been a destination painting for visitors to the National Gallery of Victoria. Recognising this, the NGV has united it permanently with another icon of Melbourne life - The bar - an unrivalled opportunity to bring two masterpieces of twentieth-century Australian art together. The paintings will also be displayed in the John Brack retrospective exhibition opening Friday 24 April 2009.

The NGV was assisted by a State Government loan to commit to the purchase price of $3.2 million, and now faces the challenge of raising the funds to repay this advance. We have made good progress so far, and now call on your support.

All contributions will be greatly appreciated. As our way of saying thank you, all donors will be acknowledged in a future edition of Gallery magazine.

Please support the John Brack Appeal and play your part in this historic acquisition.
