Making the most of your visit

The International collections of the NGV are regarded as the most comprehensive in the country; indeed, in certain areas, our collections rival in quality and depth the best in the world. The newly renovated NGV International offers visitors some of the biggest names in international art.

Temporary exhibitions

NGV International presents a full and diverse program of special temporary exhibitions. The NGV's curatorial team work with national and international colleagues to provide Melbourne audiences with the opportunity to view extraordinary works of art from around the world. Programs for everyone

A range of lectures, floortalks, workshops, tours, films, performances, children's activities and special events inspired by the NGV's exhibitions and collections are available. Programs cater for diverse interests, different age groups and all abilities and can be tailored to specific needs run by experienced staff. Special access viewing by arrangement, or guided tours for all abilities on late-night openings are all available. For specific program details refer to What's On or telephone: (03) 8662 1555

Audio guides

Audio guides are produced for selected exhibitions and are available for hire. Ask at the Information Desk or the Ticketing Desk for more information.

Information Desk

The Information Desk is located in the Foyer of the main entrance. Our friendly staff are happy to assist you with any queries or bookings.

Cloakroom

Visitors are asked to leave their umbrellas, large bags and packages in the Cloakroom located at the main entrance.

The Clemenger BBDO Auditorium

Lift access

Lift access is available from the underground Victorian Arts Centre carpark, directly to the front entrance of the NGV with its automatic doors. There is a lift inside the building, with access to each floor and ramps are also provided throughout the building. Escalators are also available.

Wheelchair and carer access

Wheelchairs are available free of charge from the Information Desk. Advance booking is advised, telephone +61 3 8620 2222. There is access in the auditorium, education theatre and studios as well as throughout the gallery spaces.

Companion and carer support

Contact the Information Desk about free access to NGV programs for registered carers.

Hearing loops

Available in the auditorium.

Signage

All statutory signage includes Braille and raised letters.

Seeing eye dogs

Seeing eye dogs are welcome at the NGV, in the gallery spaces and to all programs.

Visual describing

NGV Voluntary Guides have been trained in visual description. Enquiries: (03) 8662 1555

New Language Tours

NGV Voluntary Guides offer tours in languages other than English. Enquiries: (03) 8662 1555

Toilets and infant room

Male and female amenities with wheelchair access are available on all levels of the building. Please look for signs or ask one of NGV's security staff. An infant room for parents and children is also provided on Ground level.

Sketching and note-taking

Note-taking and sketching are permitted in gallery spaces, subject to certain conditions. For more information, please refer to the NGV Sketching & Note-taking Policy.

Folding stools are available for free loan. Telephone (03) 8620 2222 to book a folding stool at NGV International.

Conditions of entry

Admission is free to the NGV Collection. Entry fees may apply to special exhibitions. Taking photos and using video cameras is prohibited in areas which have been restricted. Smoking, using mobile phones, eating and drinking is prohibited in the gallery spaces, theatres and the Auditorium. Animals are restricted on the NGV Premises, with seeing eye dogs an exception.

Please don’t touch the art
The NGV Collection belongs to the community. Please help us conserve the art for current and future generations to enjoy by not touching or interfering with artwork on display.

Please remember
On entry, all large bags, parcels, umbrellas or any other items are to be deposited in the NGV cloakroom. NGV reserves the right to inspect any bag, luggage or object upon entry and before leaving the NGV Premises. Footwear must be worn at all times to protect you against injury.
