"This is a painting of Carol who was a Current Affairs reporter for Aboriginal radio during the Bicentennial.
During the 1980s she worked at the Western Australian Aboriginal Media Association (WAAMA) as a radio producer and announcer. During the Bicentennial, Carol reported on and produced documentaries on issues such as the Swan Brewery development, finding of burial sites on Rottnest Island and the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.
The role of the media during this time was heightened by the largest Aboriginal protest in Sydney against the Bicentennial celebrations. The Bicentennial was a travesty because it didn't acknowledge a racist history but rather swept it aside to have a party!
My sister saw the media controversy, government political rhetoric and general public ignorance of this decade as abhorrent. She worked for another seven years to present the voices of her community."
