"The central portrait is of Nancy Walley (née Jackson, née Latham), who is my mum's first cousin. The painting was done from a photograph of Nancy when she was a teenager during the early '60s.
Nancy's brother, Ron served two tours of duty in Vietnam. Her husband also served in Vietnam and she was posted in Sydney while he received training for several years following the conflict.
During this time, Aboriginal people had begun civil rights actions and the struggle for equal pay and voting rights. Aboriginal people were influenced by Afro-American campaign for civil rights in America. Nancy was one of those people who were influenced to bring about change in her community and for her family."
