This self-portrait is from a series of upfront portraits of Peggy Napangardi Jones' family all painted in a kaleidoscope of bright colours.

The snake, the cockatoo, daringly depicted upside down, and the rain cloud result in a composition full of unexpected elements.

She challenges the viewer to respond to each painting as painting, in terms of its visual qualities, and not to question what it is about.

As she says, "If someone buys it they can just look at the painting, no story written down."
