Lockhart River is an Aboriginal community of around 600 people. it is the northern-most settlement on the east coast of Far North Queensland.
In 1996 the Lockart River Art Gang was formed and a group of young Indigenous artists, including Fiona Omeenyo, Samantha Hobson and Rosella Namok, received art training through formal and informal lessons offered at the Cairns Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE. The Certificate of Visual Arts (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Program was also offered externally to Lockhart River.
