Located at the mouth of the Yarra River, Melbourne is built on the customary lands of the Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung people of the Kulin nation.
Melbourne began in 1853 as a small town. John Batman attempted the only recorded treaty with Kulin people, claiming to exchange blankets and other goods for almost 250,000 hectares of land in the Port Phillip District. This treaty is not recognised by colonial authorities.
