NGV Women's Association
Introduction
The National Gallery of Victoria Women’s Association (NGVWA) is a support group established as a Council Committee by the Council of Trustees of the National Gallery of Victoria.
The purpose of the NGVWA is to support the interests, financial and otherwise, of the NGV. This is largely done through the funding of additional items for the collections held by the NGV and through a travel scholarship for NGV curators.
The financial assistance to the NGV is fundamental to the Women's Association's purpose, however the NGVWA extends its role by bringing people into the NGV and by fostering a more general interest in the arts. Funds are raised through an annual program of interesting and amusing events. Each event is designed to attract people from varied backgrounds and with different interests. Such events include lectures, seminars, visits to regional galleries, opportunities to study garden history and design and events of a more social character with an arts based theme.
Other funds are acquired through donations. These are frequently received from patrons who have enjoyed the NGVWA events program and understand the significance of the role they play in the arts community of Victoria.
Over the years the NGVWA has been able to add an important and eclectic number of works to the magnificent collections held in the NGV. The works of well known artists such as Andy Warhol, Anish Kapoor, Christopher Dresser and Peter Booth are represented among the gifts of the NGVWA along with exquisite pieces of porcelain and eighteenth century needlework.
Recently the NGVWA put aside a capital sum, the income from which will be used to fund travel on a regular basis for NGV curators thus extending their knowledge and contacts. As well, since 1963, the NGVWA has provided financial assistance (Encouragement Awards) for promising students of the Victorian College of the Arts.
The NGVWA is proud of its achievements and works hard to maintain them.
