Plein-air painting in Europe 1780-1850
20 November 2004 to 16 January 2005
Organised in association with the Art Gallery of New South Wales
From the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, Shizuoka, Japan
This is an exhibition of landscape sketches painted en plein air, that is, painted out of doors, before the motif, by European artists in the decades before Impressionism. It includes works by the pioneers of plein-air painting from the late 18th-century, Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes and Thomas Jones, as well as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and John Constable. Also represented is a wide range of plein-air painters whose works have only recently been rediscovered and re-valuated, including Simon Denis, Alexandre-Hyacinthe Dunouy, Achille-Etna Michallon, and Eugene Delacroix.
The exhibition has been organised by the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, Shizuoka, Japan
