Levels 5-6

Join award winning children’s author Davina Bell and take inspiration from NGV Triennial artists to craft realistic and interesting characters through collaborative story writing exercises. In this virtual session, we will practice using sensory details to build characters, develop worlds and explore how characters can influence storylines and endings.

Learning Objectives 

  • Respond creatively to artworks in the NGV Triennial to develop character, setting and plot, guided by author Davina Bell
  • Experiment with a range of language features and their effects in creating interesting and realistic characters and settings
  • Plan, draft and publish texts appropriate to audience and purpose
  • Share and publish original works

Speaker

Davina Bell Davina Bell is an award-winning writer for children of many ages, from babies up to teenagers. Her best-loved picture books include All the Ways To Be Smart, Under the Love Umbrella and All of the Factors of Why I Love Tractors. She writes junior fiction (Lemonade Jones), middle-grade (Our Australian Girl, Corner Park Clubhouse), and her debut YA novel, The End of the World Is Bigger Than Love, was released in 2020. Davina is a publisher at Allen & Unwin, and in non-pandemic times, she speaks at schools and festivals around the country, sharing her love of books and ideas.

This program is part of Creative Catalyst, a program for high ability students attending Victorian Government schools.
