The self-described ‘Old man mad about drawing’, Japanese artist Hokusai is best known for his iconic work, The great wave off Kanagawa (The great wave), 1830–34. With works borrowed from the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum in Japan together with works from the NGV collection, this exhibition showcases more than 170 works by Hokusai in a rare opportunity to view iterations of The great wave side by side.
