Members Film Club

NGV International
Meet: North Entrance, (via Arts Centre forecourt)

Members Film Club is an opportunity for film enthusiasts and casual moviegoers alike to come together, discuss and consider art through the lens of film. Each film is chosen to complement artworks on display at the NGV and will be shown at the Gallery in a free film screening prior to the Film Club.

Facilitator, Ben Buckingham

Ben Buckingham has worked in the cinema industry in a variety of roles including projectionist, media coordination, box office and programming at many of Melbourne’s premiere cinema venues, including the Astor Theatre, Cinema Nova, ACMI and the Melbourne International Film Festival. Ben coordinates the AFTRs Friday On My Mind program and has a BA with Honours at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Screen and Cultural Studies. He is a proud defender of paracinema with a keen interest in the sociological and mythological aspects of film art.

Lust for Life (1956)

Starring Kirk Douglas as Vincent van Gogh, this biopic based on Irving Stone’s book of the same name explores the artist’s obsessive devotion to his work. Lust for Life is matched with Van Gogh and the Seasons

Miss Hokusai (2015)

Set in the Edo period of Japan, this anime film tells the tale of Katsushika Ōi who worked in the shadow of her father and master painter, Hokusai. Preview Hokusai when it opens exclusively to Members on Thu 20 Jul, 2pm, at NGV International.

Dior and I (2014)

Written and directed by Frédéric Tcheng, this film documents Raf Simons’ creative work for the fashion house of Christian Dior. This is the accompaniment to The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture, opening on Sun 27 Aug.
