NGV Friday Nights
Andrea Keller's Five Below

Fri 20 Jul, 6pm–10pm
NGV International
Ground Level

NGV Friday Nights returns this winter with exclusive late night access to MoMA at NGV. Featuring a line-up of international and home-grown acts presented by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, experience art, music and dining inspired by the city that never sleeps.

ANDREA KELLER’S FIVE BELOW

Andrea Keller’s newest musical creation is Five Below, a band of Melbourne’s finest rhythm section players. Featuring two bass players, guitar, piano and drums, Five Below reimagine a score of Keller compositions dating from 2002 to today, throwing the music into a new light through an intense process of deconstruction, exploration, and musical innovation. For Friday Nights, Five Below will meld acoustic sounds with electronics, pedals and effects, drawing from an eclectic array of styles including doom, contemporary classical, minimalism and contemporary jazz, producing a unique and arresting voice in Australian jazz. Featuring Stephen Magnusson (guitar), Andrea Keller (piano), Sam Anning (double bass), Mick Meagher (electric bass), and James McLean (drums).

SIMONE FORTI, HUDDLE

Simone Forti’s seminal performance piece Huddle, 1961, will be performed three times between 7.30–8.30pm as part of NGV Friday Nights. Forti was a key figure of New York’s 1960s Judson Dance Theater, and helped pioneer a new movement language that favoured the commonplace over the virtuosic. First performed in 1961 as part of a larger series of Dance Constructions in Yoko Ono’s downtown loft, Forti’s Huddle foreshadows the sense of presence and the relationship between viewer and artwork that would characterise Minimalist sculpture.

Huddle will be performed by Dance and Theatre students from the Victorian College of the Arts at The University of Melbourne.
