NGV is working to complete the provenance of the paintings listed below.
Provenance is a complex and highly specialised field of research and is
an ongoing activity for gallery staff, who are also consulting international
colleagues who may be better placed to conduct this research, using archival
documents and photographic records. As this work continues, the NGV will
update this site, publishing new findings as they come to hand. Thus far,
preliminary research indicates that it is most unlikely that the NGV holds any
paintings which were looted or improperly acquired at any time. Nevertheless,
for the works listed below, there are gaps in the knowledge of ownership during
a particular point in time between 1933-45.
