Artist statement
Ribbon is an extension from my last piece, Qrious, and continues my approach of observe, feel and try. A visually rich effect has been created by folding and twisting timber from a flat panel. The richness arises from both the continuous raking form of the entire object and its irregular individual panel section, like a ribbon being twisted. The motion can be described as a continuity roll in curve form that has been raked into multi faces. Different light conditions develop details and create various gradated shadows on the multi faces. When the sub-unit is flipped the other way around more shadow variations appear.
Ribbon has been designed for small groups, couples or individuals to do something they like within it – eating, playing chess, chatting, napping, writing or even practising Zen meditation.
Ribbon is made of Australian hardwood from an old, demolished building. It is a tough, strong timber that does not easily break or wear, making it ideal for reuse.
