Art travels: Journeying through an arts career, presented by Tony Ellwood, Director, NGV

Tue 27 Mar 2018
NGV INTERNATIONAL
CLEMENGER BBDO AUDITORIUM (ENTER NORTH ENTRANCE, VIA ARTS CENTRE FORECOURT)
Ground Level

Starting from the eastern extremity of the Kimberley, Tony Ellwood will map out a career in arts management that has taken him to the top position at Australia’s oldest and most popular public collection. Tony will give a unique insight into his career, working first as Aboriginal Art Advisor with leading indigenous artists including Rover Thomas, through to his Director roles at Bendigo Art Gallery, Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art and then returning to National Gallery of Victoria in 2012.

This richly illustrated lecture will highlight many of the major national and international exhibitions he has curated and presented during this time, and the many important connections he has forged travelling from some of the most remote arts communities in Australia, to some of the most popular arts centres in the world. This very personal lecture will talk about the challenges, risks and rewards of working in the visual arts sector.

Tony Ellwood is the Director of the National Gallery of Victoria. He began his career as an Aboriginal Art Coordinator, working at Waringarri Aboriginal Arts, Kununurra; then worked as a Curator at the NGV, specialising in major international curatorial projects. He was Director, Bendigo Art Gallery; Deputy Director – International Art, NGV and Director of the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) prior to returning to the NGV as Director in August 2012.
