Support our Conservation Work
Caring for the NGV Collection is essential to ensuring that our treasures can be enjoyed well into the future.
The NGV’s world-class conservation team is dedicated to the care and longevity of works of art in all media, including fashion and textiles, photography, frames and sculpture. Conservation projects range in scale from large to small and include the restoration of Tiepolo’s iconic The Banquet of Cleopatra, 1743–44, to Emil Todt’s exceptionally fragile sculpture of the Victorian Gold Rush, The gold diggers, 1854.
Your support will enable this vital work to continue and will provide crucial funds towards key conservation projects, the acquisition and maintenance of analytical equipment, and enable experimental research to develop more effective and efficient preservation programs.
NGV Framing Project
Framing plays a crucial role in the display of artworks. The correct frame presents a work the way the artist intended and it speaks to the taste of the period to which it belongs.
Framing to the highest standards involves extensive historical research and specialised conservation and frame making expertise. The NGV is has an experienced conservation team who are leaders in the research and production of frames.
The NGV maintains a strategic focus on developing the collection of works from the Dutch Golden Age and reframing works from this period has been identified as a major project that will greatly enhance this popular and much loved display.
The NGV has identified four works from our Dutch Golden Age to be reframed:
Flowerpiece (late 17th century)
Gift of Mr Norton E. Grimwade in memory of his wife Mrs Norton E. Grimwade, 1945
Gerard ter BORCH
Lady with a fan (c. 1660-1663)
Felton Bequest, 1946
Arent de GELDER
King Ahasuerus condemning Haman (c. 1680)
Felton Bequest, 1934
We invite you to make a donation toward the NGV Reframing Project. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible and donors gifting $2,500 or more will join the NGV’s Annual Giving program. The Annual Giving program brings together passionate supporters who play a significant role in the growth of the NGV and who enjoy engagement with the Gallery through a calendar of exclusive events.
