Folio: Grace Leong – VCE Art


Unit 3 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 1 –

Exploration and experimentation of personal responses, ideas and concepts throughout artistic practice

Grace engaged in the exploration of the human condition and conflict from the beginning of her folio.  You can see the generation and exploration of concepts and themes in large comprehensive brainstorms. The scope and communication of her personal responses is comprehensive and clear.

Unit 3 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 1 –

Grace continues her exploration and expands on concepts by seeking out inspirational artists. She considers the approach by these artists and how this might help in the development and application of her personal investigation.  Grace also begins to sketch working on possible visuals, compositions and exploring her own visual language.  Grace’s exploration is focused and effective. The scope of her investigation is comprehensive and provides clear evidence of the exploration and synthesis of concepts, directions and skills.

Unit 3 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 2 –

Experimentation and exploration with materials, techniques, processes and art forms, relevant to personal ideas and concepts, throughout the art process

Experimentation and exploration is clear throughout Grace’s art process.  The application of her selected medium trials is relevant to her personal concepts.  These small painting exercises indicate a high level of experimentation within the selected artform. You can see her clearly working through the thinking and working practices. Grace has taken her own photographs to use as support materials in the technical development.

Unit 3 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 2 –

It is evident throughout Grace’s exploration and investigation that her skills are consistent, accomplished and effective.  You can see the detail and accuracy applied to this face study and the skill within her selected mediums at this early stage of exploration.

Unit 3 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 3 –

Use of Analytical Frameworks that reflects the exploration and development of art works through artistic practice

Grace has elected to use a colour and heading system to indicate the Analytical frameworks being used to support her thinking and working process. It is clear that Grace is writing this supportive documentation in real time and referencing key points as she works throughout her artistic practice.

Unit 3 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 3 –

The annotations are reflective, critical and evaluative throughout Grace’s personal exploration. On these pages you can see Grace testing and commenting on the effects colour can have on the mood of her artwork. She clearly selects the framework she intends to use to support her thinking and demonstrates a sophisticated level of understanding of both art terminology and the frameworks.

Unit 3 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 4 –

Use of visual language and manipulation of materials, techniques and processes to develop artworks relevant to the student intentions

Grace is exploring her potential compositions and visual language through the use of photography. She is making decisions about how to best capture her conceptual direction.  Grace documents with clear annotation the effect of moving the model and colour changes in regards to the communication of ideas. This demonstrates a strong understanding of visual language and the development and refinement of her ideas throughout her artistic practice.

Unit 3 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 4 –

A strong relationship between the Analytical frameworks and the skillful application of materials and techniques are evident on these pages. Grace continues to refine her artistic practice using the frameworks to underpin her thinking and working. She is making decisions around her own visual language through the further experimentation and development of materials and techniques.

Unit 3 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 5 –

Resolution of personal ideas and intentions and refinement of the use of materials, techniques and processes relevant to selected art forms and a finished artwork

Grace has refined and resolved her ideas with the refinement of materials, techniques and processes in at least one finished artwork. Here we can see Grace has documented the creation of her finished artwork using the Analytical frameworks to support her work.

Unit 3 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 5 –

Grace has refined her personal concepts and art process to demonstrate an insightful understanding of her own art practice. Her finished work is a highly imaginative resolution of her initial exploration.  Throughout Grace has demonstrated accomplished and consistent skill in her application of materials and techniques.

Unit 4 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 6 –

Exploration, investigation and experimentation of materials, techniques and processes relevant to personal concepts and ideas in selected art form/s

Continuing on from Unit 3 Grace further explores her initial concept of the human condition with a focus on fear. She continues to show confidence with her exploration of mediums and is refining her thinking with these small thumbnail sketches. Throughout her explorations we see consistent skills that are effective and accomplished.

Unit 4 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 6 –

We can see a very high level of skill in the use of her selected materials and techniques continuing on from Unit 3. Her pastel studies demonstrate a very high level of exploration, investigation and experimentation with materials.  Grace has used paint, pastels, photography and various other materials and techniques to support the communication of her personal concepts throughout the body of work.

Unit 4 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 7 –

Use of visual language and artistic practice to refine and realise concepts in at least two finished artworks

Grace’s body of work shows evidence of an innovative use of the art process. She continually reflects on the development and refinement as can be seen here in her technique studies. She selects relevant frameworks to support her development in the realisation of ideas. She has presented at least two finished artworks. Throughout the art process she applies critical evaluation to help her realise her personal concepts.

Unit 4 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 8 –

Manipulation of visual language and technical qualities to develop, refine and resolve personal ideas and visual imagery in at least two finished artworks

Grace’s application of materials continues to be innovative as she resolves the imagery towards her finished artworks.  She explores her own visual language and applies a highly effective use of the analytical frameworks to support this. There are clear links between her visual language, the materials and techniques and the ideas and concepts.

Unit 4 – SAT Outcome 2 – Criterion 9 –

Resolution of ideas and personal concepts in the body of work

The finished artworks and visual diary demonstrate an insightful resolution to the initial personal concept of the Human Condition. Grace’s personal directions have been realised in the completion of well-resolved and technically advanced artworks. Throughout the body of work she has consistently used the Analytical frameworks to support her thinking and working towards resolution.
