NGV: Adrian, What are you doing this year?

A: This year I am studying Fine Art, at Monash, majoring in sculpture. I am really looking forward to that.

NGV: In terms of your folio last year, or your body of work last year, or your final piece, did you find it difficult  to find something to work on?

A: Ummmm... I didn't find it difficult to find something to work on I started with a large base for my work a lot of sketch ideas, just thinking about things and slowly I came to a conclusion of something I wanted to work on. Umm... that sort of took the first maybe three weeks, where I was just getting ideas together and then once I found what I wanted to work on, I sort of went from there. That was what I concentrated on.

NGV: Was there anything that influenced you to make this particular piece of work? In terms of politics or something that happened to you personally?

A: No, I wasn't really influenced in that way so much. I was more influenced by just what was around, what was available to me. More materials and things like that rather than a specific issue really.

NGV: Sure. Were there any artists or sculptures that had an influence or inspiration?

A: At my school, the teacher really showed us a large variety of artists and their work. That gave me many ideas. I was not so much influenced by one artist. My work didn't really reflect one influence. I was influenced by the general work habits and things like that and their determination,  that sort of thing. It was actually about three quarters of the way through the year, I found Keith Herring's work very similar to the work I was doing. At the start of the year not so much.

NGV: That is an interesting adaptation from someone who is regarded as almost a cartoon graffiti artist, and then adapting it to three dimensional work .

A: Yeah, I found he (Keith Herring) started off with his graffiti art and then I found when he became more famous he started doing sculpture as well. Large sculptures and Park furnishings...things like that. Which I found really interesting.

NGV: One thing we haven't talked about is why you actually chose this medium to work in?

A: Yeah I think it was basically because of what was available to me. My Dad does a lot of carpentry, so there were a lot of bits of wood and tools lying around the house, to make my pieces.
