NGV: Paul, what are you doing this year?

P: Deakin University, got accepted into the Architecture course in Geelong.

NGV: Great.  Did you find it very difficult to work on something last year? Did the inspiration come easily?

P: No it didn't.  The teacher racked my brain.  I was thinking of doing sea life because I live at Altona, but his was considered a bit common.  I was also interested in cars because the Grand Prix was just around the corner.  So I thought I would do cars.  So I went down to a couple of the antique car shows — Classic Cars and took a heap of photos and that is where it all began.  Since I was a little kid I have enjoyed cars.

NGV: Do you work on cars yourself?

P: No actually I don't, I just like the designs.

NGV: Is there a relationship between your love of cars and your decision to study architecture?

P: No not really, I just enjoyed art as a topic in general.

NGV: Did any designers or artists influence your art work? Or are there any cars in particular that have affected your artwork?

P: At the beginning I focused in on the expensive cars.  As you can see if you go through my folio it ends up becoming focused on older cars, rust, tractors and other old cars.

NGV: Did any artists influence you and your work?

P: The influence was my teacher.  Not that she actually told me what to do.  She actually steered me to look at rust on cars, houses, ships.
