Lose the nerve 2006 (detail)
monoprint
50.7 x 35.0 cm

My self-portraits were an outlet to vent the various emotions I experienced throughout the year, due to the overwhelming workload and need for organisation. The works expressed how I felt: displaced, stressed, unsure and tangled in all sorts of ways – moods experienced by a young person entering a different world. This print was made by rubbing black ink on a sheet of glass and then printing the image onto paper. A retrospective of the artist Chuck Close, which I had seen in San Francisco, changed the way I thought about portraiture and influenced this work.
