I photographed sunsets at my local beach and used them as a background for my alternative botanical illustrations. This was done so the flowers would look as though they were floating, or even growing out of the water, surrounded by an array of brilliant colour to create a beautiful ethereal effect. The flowers were created using alternative subject matter like human veins, barnacles, and anemones, together with a depiction of human hands. These flowers are ‘virtual’ and stunningly alluring, yet once the subject matter incorporated in each design is recognised, the images become even more intriguing to the viewer as the process of discovery continues.
