Describe the IDEAS behind your work short-listed for Top Arts.
This image of ‘Chad’ is approachable, passive. With  rough application of paint, I have created a warmth with little attempt to disguise brushwork into graphic clarity.
Chad exists comfortably behind the lenses of his glasses.

What where your starting points? Where did your inspiration come from?
The inspiration came from listening to the music of 60s duo ‘Chad and Jeremy’.

What media/materials did you select and why?
I used gouache on card. I love the texture and effect of gouache, it gives the piece a mock 60s feel, especially because of the colours used.

How did new technologies influence yours ideas or working methods?
I was able to use the internet to search for various pictures of Chad Stuart as reference.

What challenges/difficulties/discoveries did you encounter in producing your work?
I discovered a new and fast technique in painting with gouache.

What influences from other sources were significant in the production of your work?
For example: other artists, literature, media, historical or political events. How did this impact on the development of your work?
Listening to the harmonic and calm music of ‘Chad and Jeremy’, I wanted to create a harmonic and calm looking portrait of one of my favourite musicians.

What resources did you access?
For example: libraries, galleries, newspapers, magazines, art programs, websites, films, events and performances? Please list the most important ones.

  • Internet
  • Music CD
  • Record Collection

What exhibitions did you see in 2007? Was there a specific exhibition that influenced the development of your ideas and working methods?
The PIXAR exhibition at ACMI created an interest for me in gouache on cardboard.

Did you see Top Arts: VCE 2006? If so, what was your response?
Yes, I saw it with my school class. I thought it was very interesting and inspiring.

What advise would you give to students undertaking Art or Studio Arts?
Be open to trying different mediums, be original and use your time productively.

What were the highlights of your art studies in 2007?

  • Experimenting and creating my own style,
  • exhibiting in the ‘Without Pier’ gallery,
  • winning an art prize from the Brighton Society,
  • winning the overall Top Student for visual arts in my year at Sandringham College.

Are you planning to pursue a career in the arts? What will you be doing in 2008?
Yes I am. I plan to study at either a university or TAFE next year so I can become an illustrator/artist.
