Describe the IDEAS behind your work short-listed for Top Arts.
The works are modern interpretations of Pieter Bruegel’s (The Elder), ‘The Little Tower of Babel’. They are intended to represent contemporary construction as a world of hubris and arrogance and try to create a link between skyscrapers and the biblical narrative of the Tower of Babel.

What were your starting points? Where did your inspiration come from?
Personal experience. Viewing many structures in the process of being built within the city of Melbourne.

What media/materials did you select and why?
Photographic etching, it had a very dark atmospheric feel and by using etching I was able to reproduce the works.

How did new technologies influence your ideas or working methods?
It was not a major influence in my work.

What challenges/difficulties/discoveries did you encounter in producing your work?
My tests using the photographic technique where all small scale. When I created the large final pieces all the variables changed, for example: plate temperature of transfer and etching time.

What influences from other sources were significant in the production of your work?
For example: other artists, literature, media, historical or political events. How did his impact on the development of your work?

  • Bruegel – ‘The Little Tower of Babel’
  • Personal experiences
  • Mike Parr etchings

What resources did you access?
For example: libraries, galleries, newspapers, magazines, art programs, websites, films, events and performances? Please list the most important ones.
A variety of art books from a range of sources including: library, personal collection and school.

What exhibitions did you see in 2007? Was there a specific exhibition that influenced the development of your ideas and working methods?

  • Imaginary Prisons G.B. Piranesi and Vik Muniz at NGVI
Yes I found this exhibition a major influence.
  • PROOF, Contemporary Australian Printmakers at NGVA
This is where I discovered the variety of aesthetics printmaking has available.
  • Guggenheim
    interesting concepts.

Discuss any ethical or moral issues or concerns evident in your work.
All work is based on my original ideas and photography. No appropriation or recontextualising was undertaken so it was not a consideration.

What advise would you give to students undertaking Art or Studio Arts?
Consider a topic that is relevant or has special significance. Try to be exposed to as much art as possible from a range of historical and cultural climates.

What were the highlights of your art studies in 2007?
Developing the final pieces in Sat 2.

Are you planning to pursue a career in the arts? What will you be doing in 2008?
Yes, Hopefully undertaking a printmaking course at VCA.
