Katie Kelso
Art
Describe the ideas behind your work short listed for Top Arts.
I am primarily interested in capturing a ‘still moment’ in time through the dichotomy of portraiture and space.
What were your starting points? Where did your inspiration come from?
I began by sketching from photos of people engaged at music festivals, as I am interested in exploring the relationship between people and their surrounding space.
What media/materials did you select and why?
For my final piece I used oil paint due to its timeless quality; however I developed my folio through experimentation with screen printing, ink painting, charcoal, mixed media, gouache and pen.
What challenges/difficulties/discoveries did you encounter in producing your work?
My screen-printing trials did not come out as hoped which caused me to find new direction and inspiration, ultimately new concepts.
What advice would you give to students undertaking Art or Studio Arts?
Never continue to develop an idea/concept that does no longer excite you – love your work and be passionate to develop your folio.
Are you planning to pursue a career in the arts? What will you be doing in 2009?
Yes, hopefully Architecture or Industrial Design at Monash Caulfield next year.
