This exhibition coincides with the relocation of Deborah Halpern's major public sculpture Angel. Originally commissioned in 1987 as a project of the Australian Bicentennial Authority for the south moat of the NGV's St Kilda Road site, Angel has now been installed on the Yarra bank at Birrarung Marr - a spectacular new site for what is one of Melbourne's most loved works of public art.
Halpern is a remarkable artist; she is a sculptor, a painter, a potter, a printmaker, and a sometime cabaret performer! Her work can be exuberant and whimsical but is also imbued with a deep artistry. Over her 27 year career Deborah Halpern has produced an incredible body of work and through her numerous public sculptures has become well-known and respected within the community.
This exhibition surveys Halpern's practice and places Angel in the fuller context of her artistic career.
