2022 APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

The 2022 Melbourne Art Book Fair brings together ideas and practices that seek to explore the connections between art, design, publishing and language. Featuring the Stallholder Fair at NGV International on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 March, as well as the Events Program at various venues across Victoria from Thursday 17 – Sunday 27 March 2022.

Melbourne Art Book Fair brings together publishers, artists and designers to showcase some of the world’s best art and design publications.

This year, experience events at NGV, across Melbourne and regional Victoria with participating venues spanning bookstores, galleries, art spaces and rooftops.

The Online Fair Shop features over 80 local and international publishers and artists. Browse webpages and online stores to discover newly released publications, limited editions and more.

Since 2015 Melbourne Art Book Fair has provided vital links with international fairs in New York, London, Tokyo and Paris and continues to celebrate Melbourne’s status as a UNESCO City of Literature.

RUSSIAN FEDERATION

Strelka Press is the publishing program of Strelka Institute. Launched in 2012, Strelka Press publishes books and essays on modern issues of architecture, design, and emerging technologies in English and Russian. The publishing house releases both printed and digital books. Strelka Press is based in Moscow and has published more than 70 books including translated works of well- known authors such as Rem Koolhaas, Nick Srnicek, Robert Venturi, Aldo Rossi, Frank Lloyd Wright and many others and original essays by Benjamin H. Bratton, Keller Easterling, Metahaven, Lev Manovich, Pier Vittorio Aureli, Bruce Sterling and others.

The most recent publication titled The New Normal (Strelka Press, 2020) is a 548-page multi-authored book - a result of a three-year collaborative think-tank at Strelka investigating the impact of planetary-scale computation on the future of cities in Russia and globally. The book includes 21 design projects, nine newly written essays by program director Benjamin H. Bartlebooth is an editing and research platform that examines contemporary spatial practice, founded in 2013 and currently developed by Antonio Giráldez López and Pablo Ibáñez Ferrera.

Bartlebooth's recent publication, Learning to Live Together by Urtzi Grau & Guillermo Fernandez-Abascal, engages the space of the street as one for collective action and urban speculation. It invites the reader to culturally construct technology while joining public scientific demonstrations, but more importantly it aims to mobilize the imagination when it comes to reclaiming, redesigning and governing the street as common ownership - a shared space for collective gathering between kerbs, cars and humans.

Kim Taeryeong's artworks reflect personal life experience, feelings and thoughts - usually taking form in image journals.

The process involves capturing images from print and recontextualizing them with photography driven by subconscious. This allows to organize the imagery as a story. Although the story is personal, it alsoexplores a theme or broadcast a message to the world.

Kim Taeryeong is currently residing in Melbourne creating art and working on a new book, which will be released in March 2021.

Frans Masereel Centrum is an international arts center for contemporary visual artists and critics, consisting of a residence program, exhibition space and printmaking workshop. The Singapore Art Book Fair (SGABF) is an independent annual multi-day event celebrating contemporary art books and zines.

Founded in 2013, it was the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, and has now established itself as one of the leading art book fairs in Asia. Each edition showcases the innovative approaches of exhibitors from Singapore and around the world, including artists, designers, distributors, small presses, institutions, galleries, zinemakers, and printmakers. Free and open to the public, the fair draws thousands of visitors each year, with more than 7,000 over one weekend in the most recent 2019 edition.

ILAM PRESS: ILAM PRESS

NEW ZEALAND

The Ilam Press is a non-profit arts publishing project established by Aaron Beehre and Luke Wood in 2011. The press operates as a center for both teaching and research at the school, while also providing significant connections and working relationships with artists, designers, curators, and institutions in New Zealand and internationally.

Ilam Press' most recent publication, No Planet B, is by artist Jon Campbell about the virus that emerged from our stressed planet at this time added new expressions into the mix as the community worked to ‘flatten the curve’ and felt that ‘a breathing space between disasters would be good’.

For many years as a way of easing her apprehension with the lack of action on the unfolding climate crisis, Bronwyn Johnson kept a list of climate related expressions. These expressions focussed on ecological extinction, bushfire, water and heat.

Jon Campbell re-worked and edited these sayings into 15 paintings. Jon sent these designs to Aaron Beehre at Ilam Press in Christchurch, NZ who then worked his magic with the Risograph printer to produce this limited-edition artist book of stunning prints.

OEI: OEI

SWEDEN

OEI is a Stockholm based magazine for extra-disciplinary spaces and de-disciplinizing moments – experimental forms of thinking, montages between art, poetry, theory, and documents; critical investigations and mappings, editorial enunciations, non-affirmative writing, new ecologies, and counter historiographies.

OEI, started in 1999, has published 91 issues. The accompanying publishing structure OEI editör has released some hundred titles of investigative poetry, aesthetic documents, bookworks, theoretical and poetological essays. As part of its publishing practice OEI has also organized numerous events: from readings, presentations, lectures and talks to seminars, film screenings and exhibitions.

A PUBLISHED EVENT: A PUBLISHED EVENT

AUSTRALIA

Artists and writers, Justy Phillips and Margaret Woodward, (working collaboratively as artist duo, A Published Event) make long-term relational artworks through shared acts of public telling. Exploring chance encounter, constructed situations and the shared authorship of lived experience, A.P.E. work with artists and writers, materials and ideas, writing, book-works, installation and performance.

A.P.E. regularly undertake local and international fieldwork and residencies, participate in exhibitions, international arts festivals and artist’s book fairs. In 2019, Phillips and Woodward were awarded the Ruth Stephan Fellowship at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Yale University and were Visiting Artists at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, CT. In 2017, they were selected as collaborating artists in the Banff International Curatorial Institute’s Residency Geologic Time curated by Max Andrews and Mariana Capena Luna (Latitudes), with faculty, Sean Lynch (Ireland). Two of A Published Event’s 2017 publications, Crocoite by Margaret Woodward and Fall of the Derwent by Phillips and Woodward were long-listed as finalists in the Premier’s Literary Awards 2017, Tasmania, Australia.

Dylan Smyth is a Newcastle-based visual artist primarily working in photomedia with a strong interest in the built environment. He exhibits both regionally and nationally as a part of his contemporary practise and is a regular book publisher.

Dylan Smyth is a person, originally created in 1984. He has since developed into what is commonly known as an 'adult' and also, an artist.

Dylan's art focuses on built things, he is fascinated by the things we put together with great difficulty and call our homes. He reckons these built things tell us a lot about society and the individuals that drink their cups of tea and wash their unmentionables within them.

Keep a sharp eye out and you might find Dylan creeping around your neighbourhood taking an awkward photo of your driveway, or your neighbours gnome collection.

Mind Head is a ground-level publishing outlet. Our intention has always been to document and time capsule the seldom accessed – from core graffiti to off the beaten track travel stories. Data anxiety – fear of hard drive failure – gave impetus to our inaugural publication, Crunch Time. A six-part graffiti magazine series 2012-2016 which catalogues some of the most important players in Melbourne’s purist art movement. We followed it up with Lost On Earth, 2016-present – a road yarns and memoirs compilation. Within the first six issues you’ll find tales of jail, freight train hopping, boats sinking, enlightenment and more.

Perimeter Editions is the award-winning publishing imprint of Melbourne-based bookstore Perimeter Books and distribution house Perimeter Distribution.

Founded in 2011, Perimeter Books stocks a selective range of independently published books, editions and zines spanning photography, art, theory, text and the more lateral ends of design and architecture. The store also curates an active program of exhibitions, talks, launches, workshops and consultations. In 2012, Perimeter launched its in-house publishing imprint Perimeter Editions, which has since published more than 50 titles, winning several awards and exhibiting at key art book fairs globally. The TERRAIN Bookshelf emerged as a concept from the National Gallery of Victoria’s Art Book Fair in 2020, to illuminate the transformative power of art and design publishing for engaging critical dialogues across fields of ecology, technology and culture.

Through the power of art and thoughtful design, we can produce cultural frameworks that improve the way humans embrace their urban precinct as a habitat encompassing a positive and mutualistic relationship with the non-human world.

Recognising too, how technology has encroached upon our understanding of ‘life’ helps us come to terms not only with the technologies we have produced, but what it means to be human.

In a broader sense, this approach seeks to address wider ecological solutions continuously undermined by human (Homo Sapien) and more-than-human (human, atom, plant, machine, animal) separation - particularly during a time where printed words and images are seen as invaluable offline assets, outside of the virtual abyss that ensued with pandemic normativity.

The Bookshelf consists of a selection of publications, that individually utilise a unique language of design to communicate their stories across our key fields of interest. All of these stories held on the Bookshelf, when placed in association with one another, collectively share the vision of TERRAIN and the transformative effect non-fiction art forms can play in understanding our human-nature relatedness, as humans living in a more-than-human world.

Set within the idyllic surrounds of the St Andrews bushland, 60 minutes north-east of Melbourne, the Baldessin Studio operates from the bluestone studio conceived and built by George and Tess Baldessin in the 1970s. The light-filled studio, consisting of three open spaces, is fully equipped for all forms of intaglio and relief printing—with a large, motorised etching press, two manual geared intaglio presses, and the newly restored 1864 Albion press—as well as additional photogravure facilities. Baldessin Studio is overseen by a Board who also act as the coordination team, and who all work on a voluntary basis, using the studio for their own personal art practice, while helping to facilitate and run the organisation.

Ever since an art history lecture on Minimal Art in 1987, Gail has been dedicated to what she thought were, at the time, the work’s main precepts. By 1993, when Donald Judd wrote that this work had no history, no context nor terms with which people could grasp its spatial occurrence, Gail had already encountered this. Against the odds, then, Gail’s particular practice has enjoyed considerable attention. Forever dedicated, however, to the precepts that first prompted her thirty years ago, Gail continues to seek the terms with which others might grasp what is most extraordinary about this type of work.

Harnessing the programming language Processing, they have created a generative layout system which formulates chance. By combining randomisation with variable printing techniques, they produce a limited run of publications that are completely unique. An experiment in designer/algorithm collaboration.

Their book addresses critical and speculative ideas of collaboration, randomisation, design systems and the importance of play through design.
