Youth Access Project:
Young Men in Custody program
Art program and touring exhibition of works created by young men in custody and mentoring artists (July 2003-January 2004)
The NGV Youth Access Project and Whitelion partnered with other organisations, including Department of Human Services Melbourne Juvenile Justice Centre and Kangan Batman TAFE, to offer young men in the custodial juvenile justice system the unique opportunity of working with practising artists and staff from the NGV to create an art exhibition that both responded to works in the gallery's collection, and enabled the young men to communicate ideas about themselves, their identities and concerns. The exhibition, which included text, images and video, was toured regionally to the Shepparton Art Gallery and the Latrobe Regional Gallery. Workshops for primary and secondary school students were also conducted in these rural areas.
