NGV’s exciting new Ancient World gallery showcases works from ancient Egypt, the Near East, Greece, Italy and Mesoamerica. Situated on Level 2 of NGV International, in the heart of the Gallery’s permanent collections, the collections are displayed across three areas, encompassing Mesoamerica, The Classical World and Egypt and the Near East. An Excellent Adventure invites children on a journey inspired by a time when sailing ships explored the seven seas. Climb aboard with our two intrepid young adventurers and along the way discover treasures, stories, myths and legends. Peek into the wonderful cabinets of curiosities to examine the intricacies of the ushabti figures from Egypt, ancient stories recorded on artworks from the Mediterranean and Asian symbols found throughout the NGV collection. Through hands on and multimedia experiences, children aged 0 – 8 and their families can journey together to explore the world through art.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to follow the clues to step through time.
From an Egyptian hieroglyph to digital contemporary artworks, Time Catcher takes visitors on a journey from ancient times to the modern day. Exploring how art has been used to interpret key moments in time, Time Catcher showcases works as diverse as an ancient Chinese Tomb Ware dog and Victoria’s Centenary clock in the shape of a birthday cake. Incorporating a variety of hands on and multimedia experiences, children and their families can trace time through art and see firsthand how the creation of artworks has informed our understanding of the past, present and future.

Light Play presents artworks from across the NGV Collection that investigate the way light affects the world around us.From ancient Egyptian to contemporary works, this interactive exhibition allows children to bend, distort, reflect, and refract to their hearts’ content whilst engaging with some of the very basic, everyday principles of physics that are so fundamental within our lives.
