About this work

Kawakubo’s second runway collection, titled Indigo Dye and Twist, showcased her interest in handmade fabrics, contrasting textures and traditional hand-dyeing techniques. Throughout the 1980s, Kawakubo worked with specialist Japanese textile manufacturers to produce fabrics with distinctive characteristics. She commissioned ‘loom-distressed weaves’ and fabrics that were repeat-dyed and then sun-bleached, crumpled or bonded.
