Go your own way.

Book your self-guided visit to the NGV Collection or exhibitions to receive current information about visiting the Gallery with school groups. Entry to the NGV and many exhibitions is free. For ticketed exhibitions, one teacher is admitted free of charge for every fifteen students.

Bookings are required for all school groups.

Welcome to the Gallery All Levels

The NGV is yours to discover. This art adventure is ideal for a first time visit to the NGV. Students explore the Gallery and interpret and discuss works of art and design across place and time through major works in the NGV Collection. No prior knowledge necessary.

Artful Thinking All Levels

Think adventurously through art and design. Discover ways to explore and respond to works from different times and cultures. Educators lead interactive sessions in gallery spaces that draw upon a range of thinking strategies and tools including Artful Thinking routines developed by Project Zero and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Young at art Levels K-2

Inspire wonder through art and play. Immerse young learners in the magical world of art through playful, interactive and sensory activities focusing on stories, emotions and ideas.

Artful English Levels 5-10

Nurture a love of writing. Develop rich descriptive vocabulary and experiment with language and imaginative concepts for creative writing using art and design from different times and cultures as inspiration. Students create a booklet of responses that can be used in the classroom to produce extended pieces of writing.

Reading and Comparing Levels 9-11

Explore, compare and discuss art as visual text. Using works that convey similar ideas, issues and themes, students reflect on the world and human experiences. Program includes supporting materials that can be used in the English classroom to produce comparative text studies. Ideal preparation for VCE English.

The Art of Play Levels 9-10

Explore the Gallery, find inspiration, get creative and have fun. This engaging program of short activities challenges students to work together to draw, describe, perform, create and curate. An ideal learning experience for students participating in a Melbourne city experience.

Write About Art Levels 7-12

Creative ways to understand and describe art. Inspire students to analyse, interpret and write about art with confidence. Following an introduction to strategies for writing about art, students participate in a practical session in the Gallery to generate rich, descriptive writing inspired by works on display.

All About Design Levels 3-12

What is design? What do designers do? Discuss works from the NGV Collection to explore how designers solve problems, present possibilities, tell stories, reflect their time and imagine the future. Discover design as a process and a way of thinking that helps to shape the world we live in.

Design History and Styles Levels 10-12

Baroque or Bauhaus, Modernism or Memphis: How and why has design changed over time? From classical to contemporary, discover the characteristics of key design periods, movements and styles through an engaging look at works in the NGV Collection. Learn about the social, cultural and technological influences that have shaped design in different times and places and build descriptive language and tools for talking about design.

Design Challenge Levels 3-10

This lively, hands-on design workshop challenges student teams to respond creatively to a design brief related to current design exhibitions or displays. Program includes a one hour guided visit to engage with design on display at the NGV.

Architect for a Day Levels 10-12

Think like an architect. Explore the role of architecture and its impact on our world in an illustrated lecture introducing the work of some of the major architects of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and by viewing contemporary design and architecture in the NGV Collection. Be inspired by an illustrated talk presented by a practising architect and take part in a collaborative practical studio which investigates the initial stages of creating a building, from sources of inspiration to preliminary drawings and building a concept model.

Ideas and Inspiration Levels 10-12

Where do artists and designers get their ideas? How does an idea become a finished work? Explore the diverse ideas and materials that have inspired creative practitioners across time and place, while gathering inspiration of your own. Discuss how materials and techniques connect to ideas, culture, meanings and messages.

VCE Studio Arts: Art Industry and Contexts VCE

Behind-the-scenes at the NGV. View and discuss a NGV exhibition with a focus on developing key knowledge and skills required for Unit 4, Area of Study 3 – Art Industry Contexts. Find out what curators, conservators, designers and marketers do to prepare and present an exhibition in Australia’s oldest and most visited public gallery.

VCE Art: Analytical Frameworks VCE

Embrace Analytical Frameworks – Structural, Personal, Cultural and Contemporary – to discuss, analyse and interpret art works.

Uncover new ways to explore literary perspectives. Analysing literary criticism or reading a text can be challenging. Through visual analysis of works on display, students are supported to gain the skills necessary to advance their understanding of critical theory from a range of historical, cultural and contemporary contexts.

Learn, explore and articulate principles of visual perception. Use original works of art to identify and describe gestalt principles, pictorial depth cues, constancies and optical illusion. Find out how artists explore visual perception and how visual perception informs our experience and understanding of art.

VCE Outdoor Education VCE

Explore the outdoors, indoors. Investigate how art and design reflects human relationships with the Australian environment and compare Indigenous and non-Indigenous views of the landscape. What do representations of the land reveal about different understandings of the landscape throughout history?

Enliven debate and discussion about problems in value theory focusing on themes and questions from the study design, including

On aesthetic value: What is art? What is beauty? What is the purpose and value of art? To what extent is a society justified in censoring art?
On the interpretation of works of art: What is the relationship between art and philosophy? What is the relationship between the meaning of a work and the intentions of its artist?

IB Theory of Knowledge Year 10, IB

How do you know? What is the nature of knowledge in the visual arts? Explore a range of works of art to reflect on the significance of shared and personal knowledge to both the artist and viewer, when making knowledge claims about visual art. Consider how the senses, imagination, reason, emotion, language, intuition, memory and faith inform the way artists create art, and the way viewers respond to and interpret art.

Plan your visit

To prepare for your booking, please note the following:

  • Bookings are essential for all school and student groups
  • Bookings must be made at least 4 weeks in advance of visit
  • All programs are presented by experienced educators
    Chinese translation available on request (at additional cost, confirmed at time of booking)
  • A teacher or adult accompanying your group is also welcome to translate during the visit

Terms and Conditions

Please note the following terms and conditions prior to booking:

  • All bookings are confirmed at time of booking. Tentative bookings are not accepted
  • Invoices will be issued by NGV prior to visit. Payment must be paid at least one week prior to the visit
  • Requests to amend confirmed booking details (such as change to participant numbers), must be made by email at least 14 days prior to visit.
  • Full program fees will be incurred for late cancellations or amendments.
  • No refund for variance in student number during visit
  • Students must be supervised at all times by a teacher or adult
