Focusing on the work of Eugene von Guérard, NGV curator Rebecca Edwards explores depictions of the Australian landscape on display in Colony: Australia 1770– 1861 and how the Australian environment was seen and interpreted by European artists.

Images of the Australian landscape, whether they were created for navigation, as record or to elicit pleasure, were also constructed for colonial audiences and could communicate the complex relationships between settlers, the land and First Peoples.

This talk will be followed by a Curator’s Perspective on Gordon Bennett with Pip Wallis, Curator, Contemporary Art, NGV at 11.30am in Colony: Frontier Wars.
