MAURICE BROWN
7–7.45pm & 8.45–9.30pm

Maurice Brown’s talent orbits him simultaneously through three worlds: contemporary jazz, blues-rock and cutting-edge hip hop. He is a mastermind as a trumpeter, composer, arranger and producer. When Maurice picks up his horn, his soulful melodies soar into a rarefied space that uniquely marries be-bop to hip-hop and rock, producing his own distinctive sound. Displaying an affinity for the trumpet at an early age as he won the national Miles Davis Trumpet Competition and studying under legendary clarinetist Alvin Batiste, his critically acclaimed debut album HIP TO BOP, recorded in New Orleans, foreshadowed his unique talent for creating fresh bop-inflected jazz. Maurice performs original content from his latest album The Mood, released on double vinyl in 2017.

LET THEM EAT CAKE
6–7pm and 7.45–8.45pm

Vocalist Sandy Whittem is a Melbourne-based singer, actor, comedian, director and multi-award winning musical theatre performer. Sandy is classically trained in singing, versatile across a range of genres including classical, jazz, musical theatre, pop, folk, and country. Josh Cake is a celebrated Melbourne guitarist, pianist, singer and songwriter with a background in music theatre, cabaret and comedy.

SIMONE FORTI, HUDDLE
7.30–8.30pm

Simone Forti’s seminal performance piece Huddle, 1961, will be performed three times between 7.30–8.30pm as part of NGV Friday Nights. Forti was a key figure of New York’s 1960s Judson Dance Theater, and helped pioneer a new movement language that favoured the commonplace over the virtuosic. First performed in 1961 as part of a larger series of Dance Constructions in Yoko Ono’s downtown loft, Forti’s Huddle foreshadows the sense of presence and the relationship between viewer and artwork that would characterise Minimalist sculpture.

Huddle will be performed by Dance and Theatre students from the Victorian College of the Arts at The University of Melbourne.
