Seurat painted in a new way. He didn't mix colours and painted slowly using dabs of colour instead of brush strokes. He thought this made the colours brighter.

Artists before him, called the Impressionists, painted very fast, mixing colours and painting the light at different times of the day.

Seurat and other artists who started painting in this new way were called Neo-Impressionists - the New Impressionists.
