Collecting the Now Symposium

The art and design of the twenty-first century is characterised by complexity and change. Contemporary artists and designers experiment with new materials, emerging technologies and fluid conceptual frameworks that challenge normative approaches to the collection, preservation and presentation of art within collecting institutions. ‘Collecting the Now’ means collecting works that defy easy categorisation by media type or size and may invite an active and iterative engagement with the visitor that contradict traditional preservation conventions.
The program for this two-day symposium will bring together an inter-disciplinary mix of conservators, installers, registrars, contract specialists, curators and artists to explore the challenges presented by the acquisition and display of contemporary art and design. It will be an opportunity to share the innovative methods, practices and materials being used to address their custodianship and is relevant for those working with public, private or university galleries and art storage facilities.

Deborah Potter is the Head of Conservation at Tate, in post for 8 years and is responsible for directing the work of the Conservation Department and its specialist staff to achieve Tate’s mission, caring for Tate’s collections and delivering the programme. In this role, she promotes and supports the development of conservation practice within a 21st Century museum environment by preserving and supporting access to Tate’s growing and changing collections. This has included supporting the delivery of 2 Capital Projects with new building extensions at Tate Modern and Tate St Ives over the last 2 years. Specialty areas within Tate Conservation include: Painting, Frames and Workshop; Sculpture and Installation; Paper and Photography; Time-based Media; Conservation Science and Preventive Conservation. Potter’ previous organisations have included; National Army Museum, Glasgow Museums and Galleries, University of Leicester, Royal Naval Museum. Her current areas of focus include: Sustainability and Environmental Conditions, Strategic Leadership and Management.
Veronica Castillo is Head, Collection & Exhibition Services, M+. Initially trained as a Conservator she moved towards Collections Management at an early stage in her career. She worked at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid between 2001 and 2011 in various registrar and exhibition management focused roles. In 2011 she helped in establsh the new Museo Carmen Thyssen in Malaga. In 2012 she moved to Hong Kong to help build M+, a new museum for visual culture in Asia. She now heads the Collection & Exhibition Services department that deals with all the activities related to collections care and exhibitions management, as well as the library and the archive. Throughout her career, Castillo has been actively involved with museum professional groups and training. She is now actively engaged in raising awareness on heritage preservation and supporting professional development within the Asian region.
