Analia Saban

PROJECT

Continuing her exploration of fragility and balance, Analia Saban renders heavy marble as weightless as a puffer jacket floating on a single hook. The folds in the marble, or puffs in the jacket, resemble historical depictions of drapery, a subject that, from antiquity to the Renaissance, was traditionally chosen to demonstrate artistic skill. Saban’s contemporary approach, however, is carved using the latest robotic technology, removing the artist’s hand from the work’s creation and resulting in an exploration of the dichotomy of human versus machine in contemporary art practice.

ABOUT

Blurring the lines between painting and sculpture, imagery and object, Analia Saban’s work frequently plays on art-historical references and traditions. Her unconventional methods include ‘unweaving’ paintings, laser-burning wood and crafting sculptures using software and the latest robotic technologies. Born in Argentina and based in Los Angeles, Saban received a BFA in visual arts from Loyola University, New Orleans, in 2001 followed by an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2005. She has featured in many exhibitions globally, including at American institutions, Cleveland Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Her work is held in many museum collections, including at Centre Pompidou Foundation, Paris (France) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (US).
